The academic year is over and I'm no longer an art student (at least for the time being). Time to post some pictures from my two final shows. First off, here's the work for the Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art final show at Byam Shaw / Central St. Martins. I showed Sonnet and a new piece called Rust, steel, latex, perspex in which a single thick sheet of rusty metal, propped up by a thin rod, generates a series of framed latex impressions. The exploration of traces, the decay of materials (rust), the poetry of light and transparency, the contrast between spillage and formalism and the possibility of drawing with objects in space are some of the interests present in the work. And now the other exhibition, titled 'From Work to Text', for which I worked together with the graduating students and future curators from the BA Criticism, Communication and Curation course at Central St. Martins. My first proposal was to create a connection between the gallery space and its previous existence as a mere undercroft beneath the St. Martins building in Holborn. I wanted to lift some carpet tiles to reveal the concrete underneath and build an enclosure around it (an enclosure inside the enclosure of the gallery, which I wanted to call Disclosure). The managers of the gallery (incidentally called Innovation Gallery) applied their box-ticking mentality and banned me from touching the tiles. My final piece, called Homage to Innovation, is my response to this whole process. You can read my original proposal here.
